    • | GST in India
      • ##chevron-right## May 2017 Check all latest documents, neatly listed, for download, from this page ##chevron-right## 19-05-2017 The GST Council in its meeting held in Srinagar cleared all nine rules for the roll out of the new indirect tax regime, pertaining to - composition, valuation, transition, input tax credit, invoice, payment, refund, registration and return. Later the entire list of tax slabs applicable on goods and services was also released. Download those here (for Goods), here for Services and here for Compensation and Cess rates. ##chevron-right## 18-05-2017 The Goods and Service Tax (GST) is expected to bring down prices by eliminating multiple taxes, and efforts are on to ensure mass consumption products do not become costly. The possibility of lower rates in each category exists if they are consumed by the weaker section of society. ##question-circle## Bodhi Saar Prashn datewise ##chevron-right## 09-05-2017 Finance minister Arun Jaitley said that quarterly filing of returns under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was not workable for tax payers above Rs.50 lakh turnover because input tax credit has to be given every month. Only small taxpayers, whose turnover is below Rs 50 lakh per annum under the composition scheme, can avail of filing quarterly returns. But these will not be able to avail of input tax credit.  ##chevron-right## 06-04-2017 India’s dream of a ‘one nation one tax' crossed the last hurdle with the Rajya Sabha passing all the four bills related to the Goods and Service Tax (GST) without any amendments. Former Prime Minister and senior Congress leader Dr. Manmohan Singh asked the Congress not to seek changes in the four bills. The long-awaited GST is thus poised to be implemented from July 1, but industry is worried as preparations need a lot of time.   ##chevron-right## 27-03-2017 With the target of rolling out the new indirect tax regime from July 1, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented 4 bills related to Goods and Service Tax (GST) – Central GST (CGST), Integrated GST (IGST), Union Territory GST (UTGST) and Compensation law Bill – in the Lok Sabha. Studies estimate that the growth rate could increase by 2% with the implementation of GST. ##chevron-right## 22-03-2017 The Finance Minister has said that GST will increase the volume of taxation, remove the tax on tax situation, and therefore make goods, commodities and services a little cheaper and far more convenient.   ##chevron-right## 21-03-2017 With a target of launching the GST regime from 01 July 2017, the Union Cabinet has cleared four supplementary Goods and Services Tax (GST) legislations which will be introduced in Parliament in the ongoing budget session. A fifth legistaion on amending the Excise and Customs Act will also be brought. The Finance Minister has appreciated that all decisions in the 12 GST Council meetings so far were taken through consensus, and not voting.  ##chevron-right## 12-03-2017 The Central Bureau of Excise and Customs (CBEC) Chairman has said that the inquiry into a probable case of service tax evasion by Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) - the company building the IT backbone for the new indirect tax regime - is going on.  ##chevron-right## 10-03-2017 It is feared that since some states may lose out on revenues in the GST regime, as GST is a consumption based tax paid at the point where goods or services are consumed and not where they are manufactured. This would mean that poorer state, they can resort to the provision where a state can challenge and demand a separate tax under GST, even if the amount was paid in another territory. Experts feel a separate disputes settlement mechanism is needed under the GST if litigation is to not tie down the system.  ##chevron-right## 03-03-2017 Go through the relevant section in our updated GST Bodhi for a comprehensive list of criticisms of the GST regime. Click here for March 2017 update   ##chevron-right## 03-03-2017 After the March 4/5 meeting is over, the central and state officials will start the exercise to determine which goods and services fall in which tax bracket, for final Council approval. Together with this, the goods and services that would attract a cess on top of the peak rate need to be decided, to create a corpus to compensate states for revenue loss from GST in the first 5 years.  ##chevron-right## 03-03-2017 In a crucial two-days session on 04 and 05 March, the GST Council will try to seek consensus on approvals on iGST (integrated GST), cGST (central GST) and sGST (state GST) drafts before the second half of Parliament's budget session starts on 9 March. To roll out the new regime from 1 July, the two laws - the Central GST (CGST) Act and Integrated GST (IGST) Act - must be approved by the Parliament and each of the state legislatures have to pass the State GST (SGST) Act.  ##chevron-right## 18-02-2017 In a bizarre development, the private company that is developing the GSTN (the I.T. backbone of GST regime),  is under scrutiny for probable tax evasion! The service tax department (under the Central Bureau of Excise and Customs (CBEC)) has issued a summon. Analysts say that grants by government are not subject to Service Tax. ##chevron-right## 18-02-2017 It seems likely that the GST will be rolled out by July, as the GST Council has approved a draft law that seeks to compensate fully the States for revenue losses as a result of GST implementation. Now 3 draft laws are pending to be approved in the next meeting - the C-GST law, the I-GST law, and the S-GST laws. Once that is done, these draft laws will reach the Parliament (post present recess) latest by March 9/10, 2017.  ##leaf## Read a detailed Bodhi on GST here ##chevron-right## 14-02-2017  The rollout of GST will administer another short-term shock to the economy, and will affect corporate performance, feels Andrew Holland of Avendus Capital. ##play-circle-o## Watch many video analyses of GST related issues on Bodhi Shiksha channel   ##chevron-right## 14-02-2017  Some top corporates (Asian Paints, Sun Pharma, Religare, Arvind etc.) have announced merger of subsidiaries with themselves (the parent), as no such tax benefit (for which these structures were created) will be available under GST regime. ##chevron-right## 09-02-2017  The top ecommerce companies Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal have opposed the proposed tax collection at source (TCS) under the GST regime, which will require them to withhold the tax payable by sellers (on their platforms) and deposit it with the government. The companies say this will block working capital, and may force sellers to move offline.  ##chevron-right## 06-02-2017  The Finance Ministry has warned all officials that any disagreement with government policies will invite strict action. This is in light of the massive agitation being planned by 70,000 employees against GST Council decisions on ceding a lot of  ground to the States.  ##chevron-right## 01-02-2017  The government has made it official in the Union Budget presented to the Parliament today.  GST is coming, and the government has refrained from tinkering with the tax rates in the meantime.  ##chevron-right## 25-01-2017  The fire of revolt on GST seems to be taking an ominous shape. Various associations of the central govt. tax officers across India (numbering 70,000 officers) have threatened to undertake a non-cooperation movement against the "wrong decisions" of the GST Council regarding division of powers in the GST regime. These CBEC officers are not happy with ceding of taxpayer base to the states! ##chevron-right## 23-01-2017 In a surprise development, a tax officers’ association (All India Association of Group B Central Excise Gazetted Executive Officers) has “warned” the Finance Minister not to implement the GST in a hurry, and to roll back some “illegal” decisions of the GST Council (like transferring 90% of cases less than Rs.1.5 cr to States under GST) else they’ll be forced to take judicial recourse, which will further delay the GST launch, and further dent the already affected GDP (due to demonetization). ##chevron-right## 18-01-2017 The GST Dual Control issue was resolved thus - for all assessees with revenues less than Rs.1.5 cr per annum, states and centre will share the audit and scrutiny in 90 : 10 ratio (random selections). For those above this limit, the sharing will be equal.  ##play-circle-o##  May like to watch many analyses videos on this theme at the Bodhi Shiksha channel.  ##chevron-right## 17-01-2017 The GST rollout will be around July 1, as the contentious issue of dual control stands resolved in the GST Council.  ##chevron-right## 11-01-2017 Revenue Secy. Hasmukh Adhia says GST will usher in a very simple and less burdensome taxation regime as it will be a single rate indirect tax which can be paid by debit/credit cards, cheque and NEFT, making it easier for traders and industry to access Input Tax Credit and also ease compliance burden as the entire country will become a single market. ##chevron-right## 07-01-2017 FICCI President Pankaj Patel said that after government finalises the GST rules, industry will need at least 3 nmonths to put softwares etc. in place. ##chevron-right## 07-01-2017 The BJP National Executive congratulated the government for demonetisation, and it was acknowledged that the move was necessary to smoothly implement the GST regime. ##chevron-right## 07-01-2017 "The GST regime will be launched between April 1 and September 16 and will convert the indirect tax administration as SMART (Simple, Model, Accountable, Responsive and Transparent)" - feel officials. ##chevron-right## 05-01-2017 The finance ministry has agreed to refund 90% of the duties paid by exporters in the process of manufacturing items for export within a period of seven days. ##chevron-right## 27-12-2016 The government still looking keen to meet the 01 April deadline! States talking of 01 July, and corporates seek more time to get their systems ready. ##chevron-right## 23-12-2016 The residual issues left for GST Council's next meeting (8th) on January 3/4, 2017, are the Interstate GST law, the issues of dual control and cross empowerment, and the approval of the legally vetted language. ##chevron-right## 23-12-2016 In the 7th GST Council meet, the CGST and SGST laws - a total of 197 provisions and five schedules - were approved. The legally vetted copy of the drafts will be circulated to the states. Issues of dual control and cross empowerment are left. ##chevron-right## 19-12-2016 GST will work where demonetisation has perhaps not succeeded - making Indians tax-compliant - Economic Times ##chevron-right## 17-12-2016 GST is a transactional tax, not an income tax, hence can be levied anytime between April to Sept 2017 - Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister  ##microphone## English - easy, spontaneous, practical - with Bodhi Bhasha  ##chevron-right## 17-12-2016 Since the constitutional amendment was notified on 16-Sept 2016, and it allows the old taxation system to continue for one year, so from 16 Spet 2017 no tax collection on old basis is possible - Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister ##chevron-right## 15-12-2016 No scope for GST Bill to be passed in Winter Session of Parliament; Special session likely ##chevron-right## 15-12-2016 India needs a much-simpler GST structure with lower rates- Arvind Subramanian (CEA-FinMin) ##chevron-right## 15-12-2016 Bring land, realty and power sectors also under GST regime; can keep Stamp Duty on property registration separate with States ##chevron-right## 15-12-2016 Black money has to be curbed and for that, input tax credits must flow freely into the system, and for that land and real estate must be under GST ##chevron-right## 11-12-2016 GST Council fails to reconcile differences over division of administrative powers over tax collection  ##chevron-right## 01-12-2016 Anti-profiteering clause to be added to GST Laws to ensure consumers get the real benefit of lower taxes HT News ##chevron-right## 01-12-2016 Highest tax slab in GST not to go beyond the 28% limit (Congress's demand met) ##newspaper-o## Detailed analysis videos, Shrutis and PDFs on Bodhi News  ##chevron-right## 01-12-2016 An Authority will be created to ensure that input tax credits are passed on to final consumers ##chevron-right## GST Council has decided 4 tax slab rates of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28% ##chevron-right## States will be compensated through a corpus of Rs.50,000 crores and a cess on luxury/demerit goods will contribute to that corpus ##chevron-right##  [Read complete Bodhi on GST here ##link##]   [ ##thumbs-o-up##  Share Testimonial!]     [ ##certificate##  Volunteer!]
    • | Climate change
      • ##chevron-right## 20-05-2017 Researchers in Antarctica have discovered fast growing areas of mosses on the ice continent’s northern peninsula, providing evidence of climate change in the coldest and most remote parts of the planet. Amid the continuous warming of the last 50 years, scientists found two different species of mosses undergoing the equivalent of growth spurts, with mosses that once grew less than a millimeter per year, now growing over 3 millimeters per year on average. ##chevron-right## 18-05-2017 Delegates at the May 8-18 negotiations in Bonn for the 2015 Paris Agreement say there is less foreboding than when Washington last broke with global climate efforts in 2001. Trump doubts global warming has a human cause and says he will decide on a campaign threat to "cancel" the Paris Agreement after a group of Seven summit in Italy on May 26-27. India and China are now expected to lead the efforts to slow climate change. ##question-circle## Bodhi Saar Prashn datewise ##chevron-right## 13-05-2017 High-level officials from the world’s eight Arctic nations are meeting in Alaska amid concerns about the future of the sensitive region after United States President Donald Trump called for more oil drilling and development. Among those attending the meeting of the Arctic Council are US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.  ##chevron-right## 10-05-2017 President Donald Trump delayed his decision to honor or walk away from the Paris climate accord until after his return from the G-7 meeting. Divisions within Trump's administration have left in doubt the participation of the world's number two carbon polluter -- after China -- in the landmark 2015 agreement to limit global warming.
    • | Judiciary & Law
      • ##chevron-right## 20-05-2017 As promised by the Finance Minister in his Budget speech 2017-18, the Central government unveiled a draft law that seeks to confiscate properties of fugitive economic offenders and to remove loopholes to deter offenders from evading Indian law by remaining outside the jurisdiction of domestic courts. It's seen as a measure to deal with cases like liquor baron Vijay Mallya who fled to the UK.  ##chevron-right## 19-05-2017 As expected, the Kulbhushan Jadhav case was a diplomatic victory for India and a political one for the NDA government. Pakistan, as expected, has turned arrogant on the issue questioning the ICJ's jurisdiction. Some fear that Jadhav may have already been executed by the Pakistanis. Meanwhile, strange details emerged about how the UPA government had removed Salve (the winning lawyer for the first stage of this case) in a commercial litigation involving Enron's Dabhol project, in 2004-05, replacing him with Khawar Qureshi (the losing lawyer in the present case!). India lost that case that time.  ##chevron-right## 18-05-2017 The International Court of Justice (ICJ) pronounced its judgment in the Kulbhushan Jadhav case on 18th May, and ruled in India’s favour (at the first stage). The judgment comes ten days after India approached it demanding immediate suspension of the death sentence awarded to Jadhav, surprising Pakistan. India put forward the following provisional measures in its appeal : (1) Declare the death sentence of Jadhav illegal, as it violates the Vienna Convention and Indian law, (2) if Pakistan is unable to annul the decision, direct it to release the convicted Indian national. ##question-circle## Bodhi Saar Prashn datewise  ##chevron-right## 13-05-2017 The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague announced it will hold public hearings on May 15 in the case of the retired Indian Navy officer who was convicted of espionage charges by a Pakistani military court.  ##chevron-right## 11-05-2017 The Supreme Court began its hearing on six petitions and a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) that challenged the constitutional validity of Muslim practices such as triple talaq, and nikah halala along with the issue of polygamy. The court declared that it would not decide on polygamy and would limit itself to triple talaq and the consequential question of nikah halala.  ##chevron-right## 11-05-2017 The five-judge Constitutional bench of Supreme Court began its hearing on a plea that the triple talaq and nikah halala violated Muslim women's rights to equality and dignity. Just after the hearing began, Chief Justice of India JS Khehar clarified, "The matter can be summed up in three points: whether triple talaq is fundamental to Islam; if it is fundamental we have to see if we can interfere. Two, whether it is sacramental or not, and three, whether there is an enforceable fundamental right that is violated." Read more on Triple Talaq here ##chevron-right## 10-05-2017 In a dramatic development in the history of Indian judiciary, Calcutta High Court judge, Justice C S Karnan, who is facing contempt charges, ‘sentenced’ CJI J S Khehar and 7 other judges of the Supreme Court to five years rigorous imprisonment. The apex court, on the other hand, held the rebel judge guilty of contempt of court and sentenced him to six months in jail. Karnan is the first sitting judge in India's judicial history to be sentenced to a prison term.  ##chevron-right## 09-05-2017 The Supreme Court ordered that the former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav will be tried in each of the remaining five cases against him in connection with the multi crore fodder scam. The ruling came on an appeal by the CBI against a 2014 order from the Jharkhand high court that said Prasad could not be tried for the same crime twice. ##chevron-right## 09-05-2017 Referring to the practice of Triple Talaq, the Allahabad High Court has observed that under the Muslim Personal Law, marriage is a contract which cannot be terminated unilaterally. The HC said all forms of discrimination on grounds of gender violate fundamental freedoms and human rights.   ##chevron-right## 09-05-2017 The Supreme Court accepted a plea by consortium of banks against liquor baron Vijay Mallya. Mr. Mallya would have to face contempt of court proceedings. The apex court has directed Vijay Mallya to be present before it on July 10. Mr. Mallya, who fled from India last year. Mallya owes over Rs. 9000 crore to the banks.
    • | Demonetisation (DeMo)
      • ##chevron-right## 18-05-2017 Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that it is no longer safe to deal with excessive cash as through the use of technology it is easy to detect tax evasion. After having brought 91 lakh fresh taxpayers in the tax net and detecting undisclosed income worth Rs.23,144 crore in the six months after DeMo, the government launched an online portal as an extension of its ongoing initiative of ‘Operation Clean Money’.  ##chevron-right## 15-05-2017 Even after six months since demonetization, some unanswered questions remain - (1) How much old currency was returned to the system in the form of deposits or exchange?, (2) How much black money was uncovered due to the note-ban exercise?, (3) What is the amount of counterfeit notes that came into the government's possession?, (4) What is the status of remonetisation of the Rs 15.44 lakh crore old notes that were made invalid during demonetisation?, (5) How did the RBI weigh the pros and cons of the note-ban move despite obvious disruptions to economic activity?, and (6) How prepared was RBI for the following digital-money push by government post note-ban? The RBI is yet to provide answers to these questions. ##chevron-right## 11-05-2017 The government added 9.1 million new taxpayers in 2016-17, an 80% increase over the typical yearly rise, highlighting the impact of India’s November demonetization of high-value currencies. This is expected to augment the government’s tax revenue. India had only 55.9 million individual taxpayers at the end of 2015-16. Read all about Tax to GDP ratio, here ##chevron-right## 10-05-2017 When PM Modi announced demonetization of high-value currency notes, there were many apprehensions. But a definite result has been the lowering of interest rates, which was one of the prime objectives. Flushed with funds, banks have been forced to lower deposit interest rates which have made loans cheaper. ##chevron-right## 06-04-2017 The Reserve Bank of India, in its Monetary Policy review meeting  kept the Repo Rate unchanged at 6.25 percent but raised the Reverse Repo rate – the rate which banks get for deposits at RBI – by 25 basis points to 6.0 percent. Narrowing the gap between the two rates reduces volatility in the short-term money market rates. It also controls money circulation, and thereby, inflation, as banks are encouraged to increase their deposits with the RBI. ##chevron-right## 27-03-2017  RBI Deputy-Governor N S Swaminathan said that the Central Bank has no plans to introduce new denomination currencies. He said the Central Bank wants to encourage cashless transactions which are helpful to the people. He also said that NPAs are affecting the incomes and profits of banks. ##chevron-right## 22-03-2017  The Supreme Court has sought the Centre and the RBI's response on why they did not give a window to citizens to deposit demonetised currency after December 31. The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khekar, gave the Central government and the Reserve Bank of India two weeks' time to reply to the notice.  ##chevron-right## 21-03-2017  Demonetisation saw bank deposits in Gujarat grow by 22% during Q3 of 2016-17 and reached Rs.6.31 lac crores by December end (22% higher than last year), but non-performing assets (NPAs) crossed the Rs 30,000-crore mark.  ##chevron-right## 19-03-2017 The value of digital transactions nationwide declined marginally (1.5%) to Rs 92.6 lakh crore in February 2017 from Rs 94 lakh crore in November 2016 according to representative data (provisional) on electronic payments released by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).  ##chevron-right## 14-03-2017 Don't miss our comprehensive analyses of Assembly Elections 2017 in this ##leaf## latest Bodhi here! ##eye## Bonus Video included   ##chevron-right## 12-03-2017 The demonetisation debate has ended with the sweeping victory in assembly elections, especially in UP, of the Bharatiya Janata Party. If DeMo affected the poor, how come the BJP won such a landslide victory, goes the argument.  ##chevron-right## 10-03-2017 The RBI has finally released its official estimate of the impact of Demonetisation! Cautiously worded, the document says that there will be a transient effect of DeMo, which will ultimately get streamlined. Download the PDF here  ##chevron-right## 02-03-2017  Buoyed by the Central Statistics Office (CSO)’s report of GDP hitting 7.1% in the third-quarter of the year, despite demonetization, PM Modi hit out at detractors at an election rally in UP by saying that "hard work is more powerful than Harvard". His remarks are assumed to be aimed at Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, a professor at Harvard, and Dr Manmohan Singh, who is from Oxford. ##chevron-right## 23-02-2017  The elections in UP are showing DeMo polarisation also! Some regions are favouring DeMo and appreciate Modi's brave move, and some rue the decision. Who said India is predictable!  ##chevron-right## 22-02-2017  The ATMs in Delhi are throwing up! And people are getting "nakli notes" of the "churan" variety. In a bizarre incident, a customer reportedly from an SBI ATM in South Delhi got four notes of Rs.2000 that were fake notes meant for children's games.  ##chevron-right## 18-02-2017  The sudden spurt in stone-pelting incidences in Kashmir is being cited by critics of DeMo as proof that demonetisation never could have curbed counterfeit money and terrorism, as was earlier claimed. Critics also say that both the RBI and the Union Budget were very quiet about DeMo's impact in numerical terms. The silence is deafening.  ##chevron-right## 16-02-2017  The demonetisation move has crossed 100 days, and operational issues regarding multiple facets keep popping up. ATMs are not fully replenished regularly, RBI hasn't issued the final tally, IT notices are to be issued post 31 March deadline, and industry is on tenterhooks for the coming quarters. Overall, the 50 days promise for "an India of their dreams" seems not entirely within reach as of now.  ##chevron-right## 13-02-2017  The horticulture sector in India especially in the informal or rural channels has shown signs of distress post DeMo. Similarly, some of the top FMCG companies in India have reported a slowdown (shrinkage) in profits, after many years.  ##chevron-right## 10-02-2017  The government (and PMO) has swung into action to take strong action against tax evaders especially shell companies that are used to launder money, and warnings have been issued that Benami Act will be used against them. Read about Benami Act here. ##chevron-right## 09-02-2017  The CBDT has clarified again that notices sent to lacs of cash depositors post-demonetisation will not lead to any harassment as genuine taxpayers have nothing to fear. That means more than 80% of those receiving the notices have everything to fear (if Budget statistics are any indicator)! ##chevron-right## 07-02-2017  The evidence keeps poring in of the informal sector getting badly hit by demonetisation move, most visibly in small scale industries where demand and supply both are hit, and employment loss continues.  ##chevron-right## 06-02-2017  The government has claimed that the exercise of remonetisation of the economy was "over". Fin Min Secretary Shaktikant Das said so in a post-Budget discussion.  ##chevron-right## 01-02-2017  The much-anticipated Big Bang announcements like cash transfers to all Jan Dhan accounts (as a means to soothe ruffled feathers post-DeMo) did not happen in the Union Budget. The govt. gave away no major doles to any sector. Was it the fear of seeing GST derailed, or was it lack of fiscal headroom?  ##chevron-right## 29-01-2017  The new alliance of Congress and Samajwadi Party of UP has mentioned the demonetisation-induced harassment of common public as a reason for their coming together, among other things.  ##chevron-right## 25-01-2017  The President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee has urged the countrymen to "remain argumentative as has been our tradition, but not to turn intolerant". In his address to the nation on the eve of the 68th Republic Day of India, he expressed hope that DeMo will pave the way for a cleaner system soon, though it will be disruptive in the short run.  ##chevron-right## 22-01-2017  The Finance Ministry has informed the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in writing that the DeMo will widen the tax base, create higher revenue realization that will fuel faster sustainable economic growth.  ##chevron-right## 18-01-2017  The RBI Governor has not been able to answer our queries satisfactorily, said some members of the Parliament's PAC that summoned him for an enquiry post-demonetisation. However, Dr.Manmohan Singh (ex-Governor, RBI) came to his rescue in the grilling! ##chevron-right## 17-01-2017  The RBI will not allow anyone to lower its esteem. Governor Urjit Patel makes it clear that employees found bringing a bad name to the august institutions will be at the receiving end.  ##chevron-right## 14-01-2017  The inevitable has happened. Employees Unions at the RBI are up in arms against the alleged "government meddling" into monetary and currency affairs which they say is purely the RBI's domain. They seek the Governor's attention, and a meeting, and some have even called for his resignation. The government has denied all charges.  ##chevron-right## 11-01-2017  The political wrangling over the PAC calling Urjit Patel, and perhaps the PM later, seems to be growing intense. ##chevron-right## 09-01-2017  The threat by petroleum dealers to stop accepting electronic payments protesting the sudden 1% transaction charge announced by banks, seems to have had the desired effect almost instantly. Banks have put the proposed levy on hold! So it's cashless once more, confusion no more!  ##chevron-right## 09-01-2017  It has emerged that the RBI Board had approved the Government proposal (sent to it by Department of Economic Affairs) on 08 Nov., and shortly thereafter, the Union Cabinet approved it that evening itself, and immediately the PM announced it on television. Discussions had started 6 months ago on the move. ##chevron-right## 08-01-2017 The Public Account Committee (PAC), a Parliamentary Panel headed by Congress leader K V Thomas, has asked RBI Governor Urjit Patel to appear before it on 28th January to explain the entire process of demonetization and the procedures followed.  ##chevron-right## 08-01-2017 In a novel shocker, banks suddenly decided to impose a new 1% transaction charge on electronic payments by consumers at petroleum pumps Indiawide, prompting the petrol pump dealers to declare they would stop taking payment by cards from Monday (09-Jan). The development has taken even the government by surprise. ##chevron-right## 07-01-2017 The Congress protested at many places across the nation asking some straight questions on demonetisation. ##play-circle-o##  May like to watch many analyses videos on this theme at the Bodhi Shiksha channel. ##chevron-right## 06-01-2017 West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said only the President can save India from the demonetisation crisis. She exhorted the formation of a national govt. under Advani's leadership. ##chevron-right## 05-01-2017 In a horrible display of helplessness, a lady (with a child) disrobed herself and went topless at the entrance door of the RBI regional office at Delhi, when she was repeatedly turned away and not allowed to exchange old notes. This was contrary to the PM's promise made earlier. Of the multiple ways demonetisation has extracted a human cost, this was a new dimension. ##chevron-right## 04-01-2017 The RBI may have got back Rs.15 lac crores of notes in the banking system in the 50 days period! If so, it may put paid to a lot of assumptions made earlier. ##chevron-right## 31-12-2016 PM Modi mercifully did not tighten any more screws in his live telecast on national TV on new year eve! He announced many fiscal measures to ease life for various segments of population. • ##chevron-right## 23-05-2017 Iran’s newly re-elected President Hassan Rouhani criticized US President Donald Trump for his critical comments on Iran and Saudi Arabia, which had never seen a ballot box, for hosting Trump’s first foreign visit. Rouhani decisively won a presidential election on Friday, securing another four-year term. The vote served as a referendum on Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, as well as a vote of confidence on the country's faltering economy.  ##chevron-right## 18-05-2017 Trump’s Russian travails keep mounting. The US Justice Department named former FBI chief Robert Muller as special counsel to investigate alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election and possible collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Moscow. Democrats and and some of the President’s fellow Republicans had demanded an independent probe in the matter. Cries for impeachment can now be heard. ##chevron-right## 12-05-2017 The Trump administration blamed Pakistan for deteriorating India-Pak relations and warned that the ties might worsen further if another "high- profile" terrorist attack emanates from across the border this year. Islamabad's failure to curb support to anti-India militants set the stage for a deterioration of bilateral relations. ##chevron-right## 10-05-2017 US President Donald Trump dismissed FBI Director James Comey in the middle of FBI’s investigation into Trump’s Russian connections and impact on the US presidential campaign. This could initiate a new series of major executive orders from Trump now & is being likened to the Richard Nixon "massacre" post Watergate scandal.  ##chevron-right## 09-04-2017 Trump has appointed Neil Chatterjee to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees electricity, natural gas and oil at the national level. Chatterjee will play a key role in Trump's programme to reshape energy policy, most of which is opposed by environmentalists and Democrats. ##chevron-right## 06-04-2017 US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping opened their summit meeting at President Trump’s Florida resort with the urgent threat of North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and tensions over trade between the two countries. The Trump administration also suggested considering military action against Syria in response to the chemical attack.  ##chevron-right## 27-03-2017 President Trump’s policies have started showing their impact on the top educational institutions of the country as well. US universities have registered a sharp decline in the number of applications from Indian students after a series of hate crimes and fear and concerns about potential changes in the visa policies. ##chevron-right## 22-03-2017  Asian and Indian stocks fell sharply as doubts on Trump's economic growth agenda prompted investors to dump risky assets in search of safe investment options such as government bonds.  ##chevron-right## 20-03-2017 The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of links between Russian officials and Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign officials, setting off a political snowstorm. ##chevron-right## 12-03-2017 President Trump's administration has summarily removed over 40 U.S. attorneys in one shot. These were political appointments anyway. Of these, the "firing" of New York US Attorney Preet Bharara (an Indian from Firozpur) was spectacular, as he reportedly refused to resign! ##chevron-right## 03-03-2017 Russian Foreign Minister has dubbed the attacks on Trump team on the Russian angle "McCarthyism", alluding to the 1950s witch-hunt by US lawmaker McCarthy where many lost their jobs and reputations in an "investigation" that was botched and wrong from the start.  ##chevron-right## 03-03-2017 President Trump's camp attacked Hillary Clinton on the use of a private email server while being the Sectretary of State. It has now emerged that Vice President Mike Pence did the same, while he was Governor of Indiana!  ##chevron-right## 03-03-2017 President Trump is in the eye of the Russia Storm yet again. After the NSA Michael Flynn's resignation in Feb, the latest controversy is about his Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who too is allegedly charged by opponents with having met Russian ambassador to US (Sergey Kislyak) before Trump was sworn in. Trump dubbed these attacks "a total witch-hunt". His son-in-law Jared Kushner is also in the media's crosshairs for the same reason.  ##chevron-right## 25-02-2017 President Trump's staff ensured that some major media houses (NY Times, Los Angeles Times, CNN etc.) were cut off from the informal press briefing at the White House. The rift between the President and some mainstream media houses is widening by the hour.  ##chevron-right## 25-02-2017 President Trump's office has denied that there was any connection between its policies and the hate crime that took an Indian's life a day ago. His earlier tweet - "The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!" was equally explicit. ##leaf## Read the full Bodhi on 'Arrival of Donald Trump'  ##chevron-right## 16-02-2017 President Trump may have dumped the long-held US notion of a two-state solution being the only viable alternative for long term peace between Israel and Palestine, if the recent Press Meet statements are any indication.  ##chevron-right## 14-02-2017 President Trump received his first setback as Michael T. Flynn, the national security adviser, resigned on Monday night after it was revealed that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other top White House officials about his conversations with the Russian ambassador to the United States, in December 2016 about sanctions on Russia by Obama administration (this was before Trump was inaugurated).  ##chevron-right## 13-02-2017 President Trump may turn his attention to the trade surpluses that many Asian nations including India are regularly running with the US. This could lead to a lot of pain in the short run, through strategically India remains in the good books of US.  ##chevron-right## 10-02-2017 President Trump has reportedly expressed his agreement over the long-held "One China" policy which allows nations to only have informal relations with Taiwan (Republic of China) which PRC considers a breakaway province. This marks a climbdown from Trump's earlier aggressive stand (through Tweets) that had rattled the Chinese.  ##chevron-right## 09-02-2017 President Trump has reached out to the Chinese leadership through a letter and wished them well. It seems the lobbyists will need strong lobbying to get their lobbying rights back. Trump is unfazed in his moves.  ##chevron-right## 29-01-2017 The top tech company CEOs are in a state of disbelief as the reality of a Trump administration starts biting their "free borders model", where the best talent could easily be picked up anywhere from the world. Their pain found expression through many statements, including from the CEO of Twitter! ##chevron-right## 29-01-2017 President Trump's loyalty to his voters is visible and in action. His executive orders restraining Muslims from 7 countries from entering the US, and "extreme vetting" proposed, has upset all existing equations in "liberal" America. ##chevron-right## 25-01-2017 President Trump continues his action of the promised immigration cleanup and is working on the "Mexican Wall" through executive orders. He is expected to set into motion dramatic decisions that can change the course of world events in near future.  ##chevron-right## 20-01-2017 The American Presidency is witnessing great change. He has promised to eradicate radical Islam, bring back American jobs and keep "America First".  ##chevron-right## 18-01-2017 The American Presidency will witness a newcomer with the lowest approval ratings in many decades, as Trump's inaguration date comes close. The state media has openly criticised Trump for trying to use Taiwan as a trump card. ##chevron-right## 13-01-2017 In what can only be called a "horror show" for the Chinese, Donald Trump has said he does not consider the "One China" policy sacrosanct. He considers China a currency maninpulator and would want to see how they reconsider their approach towards America. He said if the US sells billions of dollars of arms to Taiwan, why won't he speak with them. This surely qualifies as the biggest diplomatic shock any Chinese government has received in the past 40 years.  ##chevron-right## 13-01-2017 The entire political opposition ('Liberals') and a large section of US media has attacked Trump on allegations of sexual escapades in a Moscow hotel. Further, his use of the word "fake media" and "germophobe" has agitated many opponents! Chinese media, meanwhile, has speculated that Trump's discretion to upset the apple cart would not last too long. ##play-circle-o##  May like to watch many analyses videos on this theme at the Bodhi Shiksha channel.  ##chevron-right## 11-01-2017 In his first press-meet after getting elected, Donald Trump was his usual candid and "slightly direct" self, and made many aspects of his future course of action clear. He will be dissociating himself from the active business interests of the Trump organisation. He also totally discarded the notion that Russia has any leverage over him. He also took reporters head-on on sensitive topics. ##chevron-right## 10-01-2017 Claims have been made that some compromising videos of Donald Trump, while in a luxury hotel in Moscow, may give Russia leverage over him!  ##chevron-right## 09-01-2017 China's state-run "Global Times" threatened Donald Trump that China will take "revenge" if America dumped the "One China" policy.
