Political funding, black money & India

The 2016 demonetisation exercise (DeMo) raised hopes for an “India of our dreams”. The linkage between black money ↔ political donations ↔ transparency in elections has never been observed more sharply, as today. The top political executive of India – the Prime Minister – has exhorted his own Party and the nation, for transparency in political funding. People want it, too, to improve their lives. Indian income inequalities have risen since 1995, without exception. India’s richest 1% hold 53% of country’s wealth (2017). India is doing rather badly in ensuring egalitarianism, despite our Constitution’s solid thrust on it. There is open speculation that DeMo has done nothing to the illegally rich. Huge Hawala rackets and large-scale shell companies have been used to launder money. Rural folk may have suffered – they exchanged their moneys at a discount (to middlemen). Many organisations have studied the incomes of the politicians of India (the MPs and MLAs.). They have found that our politicians are growing richer, regularly.
Across parties, across states, politicians grow astoundingly rich when in power, each year. Indian electorate has to ask itself – despite negative perceptions, why do we re-elect the “bad” politicians? Answer is simple – we, the people, want immediate gratification. So Indian electorates (the poor especially, pressed by daily needs) may ‘vote for subsidies’. It is high time for a massive cleanup of Indian electoral funding, for all else is useless.
