With a glorious past and inherent strengths, India needs to gear up for a challenging future.
The future of India

India completed its 68 years as a Republic on 26 Jan 2017. It is aspiring for a world power status, and has enviable strengths and some strong challenges. Our numbers are unique – a democracy of 1.3 billion. Demonetisation will perhaps chop off a percentage point from India’s GDP in 2016-17, as per IMF forecasts. So, India may temporarily lose the “fastest growing economy” tag.
However, India’s biggest immediate challenge and problem is the PRC – China. It is not leaving a single opportunity to humiliate and harass India and her aspirations globally. The Nuclear Suppliers Group entry bid of India was thwarted by only one nation – China. Others were ready to take India in, considering the impeccable non-proliferation record of India. America has been sympathetic to India’s cause, but Donald Trump administration may act in an unpredictable manner. In that light, the fact that Trump listed PM Modi at the fifth position in his calling list post assuming charge, is a positive sign. But nothing is certain over the next few months and years. America is a huge export market for India, especially in I.T. If Trump restricts access under “America First”, it will be bad news. Hence, new frontiers are needed, such as the UAE relationship. In the long run, India’s brightest prospects depend on our internal strengths. Others will treat us with respect only if we grow strong internally. Economy needs big bang reforms and a huge thrust forward now. Read a detailed Bodhi on World Politics here.
