India – Pakistan – China imbroglio

The relationship between India, Pakistan and China has remained very complex ever since the three independent nations have been formed. There has always been a lack of trust between both India and Pakistan and India and China. Read our Bodhi on “Indus Water treaty” here. It has become more of a rather unbreakable vicious circle since the 1960s when China and Pakistan came together as best friends against India. The mutual relations have come to a dead end with no solution in sight, especially in the last two years. This has resulted in a huge challenge for our foreign policy and an ever-increasing defence spending. Our entire foreign policy for the region has been concentrated on breaking the China-Pakistan nexus. (Unfortunately, the more force we apply, the stronger it seems to get)

Managing to change the China-Pakistan relationship all alone is an onerous task for India to do. Hence, it would require the assistance of other likeminded countries, both within the region and outside it. However, with Russia ‘joining’ the China-Pakistan camp, the situation for India is not easy. Read our Bodhi on “Tectonic shifts in world politics” here. Bilateral relations need to be resolved through dialogue and negotiations only. This has been India’s policy in recent times, and we have been successful to a large extent. (One needs to understand that political relationship is different from economic considerations) Our relations with Pakistan have always been overshadowed by the Pak forces against change. The change of attitude of the present government towards Pakistan also seemed inevitable due to many pressing reasons. We have also displayed the same shaky pattern towards China. Initially, the present government attempted to resolve the border issues with China, but of late, we have again adopted a stringent stance after the issues of India’s entry into NSG and declaring Masood Azhar as an international terrorist, i.e. placing him in the UN 1267 list. Read our Bodhi on “Terrorism” here

The China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has emerged on the scene, which India refuses to condone as CPEC passes through Gilgit-Baltistan, a territory that belongs to India. The monolithic Chinese state is neither prepared to forgo CPEC, nor to support India’s stand on J&K. The basis of any international relationship is the concept of give and take. You have to give something for getting something in return. Strengthen economic relations and let the political compulsions take the back seat for a while. Indian market is big enough to allow for that. Experts feel it’s important to give incentives in bilateral relations. What India is offering today does not look like that to these two! If we rely too much on US friendship, it will also not offer anything for free. We need to make our own way out of this complex situation.
