Why are Indian minds not able to bring to life a Startup that can excite the whole world?
Time for an Indian Google

The top startup “ecosystems” of world are US, UK, India and Israel. So congratulations all fellow Indians! The simple fact remains – Despite all the hype and hoopla, Indian “startups” are neither global in scope and scale, nor global in ambition, and definitely not global in capturing user imagination. [Like Google was] Read a detailed analysis on “A call for digital independence”, here.
From 2015 onwards till date, in the middle of a deglobalisation wave, Indian state governments have tried attracting startups through all possible incentives. But after all this, no single entrepreneur has stood up to say “We will create a Google from India”. The IITs, IIMs and everyone talk a lot – but on this, total silence! If only the IIT coaching industry could be called a Google – we could put the real Google to shame 😉
What is a “Global Startup”? Definition – One that can fire people’s imagination across the world (many countries) and can earn from everywhere, rather than just through Indian customers. Hence, infinite scaling is possible. The global startup starts with a totally fresh idea. They have a great unique value proposition. It creates a first-mover advantage in markets worldwide. Everyone tries to follow. Indian startups are designed to cater to Indian markets. The opportunity here is huge, but the market is very different from the rest of the world. We design to suit our needs, not the world’s. (nothing wrong in it) Our overall institutional support mechanism (how society + government + industry help startups) has a big role to play. Germany can offer many insights, though it’s a far more evolved system that ours is. Indian entrepreneurs need to know much more about government support, through programs like “Startup India”. Governments must offer quick support. It does so, but slowly. Indian problems are Indian opportunities. A true entrepreneur is one who solves a true problem. Many such Indian “true problems” can have global footprints also. Watch our video analyses on Internet Commerce, on Bodhi Shiksha channel. Indian startups need to be agile and different. When we copy foreign models, we will die when the originals enter India with huge capital infusions. To become the next Google, our design has to be competitive globally, funding should be a distant secondary issue only. A huge threat – Near zero protection to IPR in India, making it cheaper to steal and prosper, than create and prosper. The system offers no effective solution, and this deters original thinkers. Unless we change this, we are condemned to remain a nation of copy-paste-Robinhoods.
