    •  Highlights for 11-05-2017
        • 1. World politics – The International Court of Justice (ICJ) asked Pakistan to desist from executing Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav until the court rules on India’s claim that Pakistan violated the Vienna Convention in the matter. India’s claim rests on Article 36 of the Vienna Convention which allows for counselor access to foreign nationals. The main question here is whether the ICJ’s ruling binding on Pakistan? And even if it is, will it comply?
          2. World politics – US President Donald Trump dismissed FBI Director James Comey in the middle of FBI’s investigation into Trump’s Russian connections and impact on the US presidential campaign. Trump said the dismissal was necessary to restore public’s trust and confidence. This could initiate a new series of major executive orders from Trump now.
          3. Indian politics – Amid bribe charges against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleague,  Delhi’s Aam Admi Party government, in a dramatic move convened a special session of the assembly (reportedly for passing the GST Bill) and staged live demonstration of EVM tampering, in the House. The Election Commission rejected AAP’s claims that the EVMs can be hacked stating that the machine was an EVM lookalike, not an actual one.
          4. Infrastructure – During the infrastructure progress review meeting, Prime Minister Modi called for establishment of model solar cities where power needs are fulfilled solely by solar energy and gave thrust to manufacturing of solar equipment, which will also help generate employment. India’s renewable energy targets for 2022 are 175 GW, of which 100 GW will be solar!
          5. Constitution and law – In a dramatic development in the history of Indian judiciary, Calcutta High Court judge, Justice C S Karnan, who is facing contempt charges, ‘sentenced’ CJI J S Khehar and 7 other judges of the Supreme Court to five years rigorous imprisonment. The apex court, on the other hand, held the rebel judge guilty of contempt of court and sentenced him to six months in jail. Karnan is the first sitting judge in India's judicial history to be sentenced to a prison term.
          6. Climate change and global warming – President Donald Trump delayed his decision to honor or walk away from the Paris climate accord until after his return from the G-7 meeting. Divisions within Trump's administration have left in doubt the participation of the world's number two carbon polluter -- after China -- in the landmark 2015 agreement to limit global warming.
          7. Demonetization – When PM Modi announced demonetization of high-value currency notes, there were many apprehensions. But a definite result has been the lowering of interest rates, which was one of the prime objectives. Flushed with funds, banks have been forced to lower deposit interest rates which have made loans cheaper.
          8. Constitution and law – Referring to the practice of Triple Talaq, the Allahabad High Court has observed that under the Muslim Personal Law, marriage is a contract which cannot be terminated unilaterally. The HC said all forms of discrimination on grounds of gender violate fundamental freedoms and human rights.
          9. Healthcare and medicine – A new study has found that India could witness an alarming increase in cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the next two decades. The Lancet medical journal reports that drug-resistant TB could make up one in ten cases of the disease in India by 2040. A similar increase has been forecast for Philippines, Russia, and South Africa too.
          10. World economy – Saudi Arabia will cut supplies to Asia as OPEC battles against rising U.S. production that is threatening to derail its attempts to end a sustained global glut in crude. State-owned Saudi Aramco will reduce oil supplies to Asian customers by about 7 million barrels in June as part of OPEC’s agreement to reduce production and as it trims exports to meet rising domestic demand for power during the summer.
          11. Support Material on the above 10 points : 1. Terrorism and related issues in South Asia - here, 2. Trump and US politics - here, 3. Elections–corruption–AAP–Indian politics : here and here, 4. Infrastructure in India - here, 5. Indian judiciary and related issues- here, 6. Paris Agreement on Climate Change & related issues - here, 7. Indian banking and DeMo – here, here and here, 8. Triple Talaq - here, 9. National Health Policy India – here, 10. Oil economies – here.
          12. Constitution and law – The Supreme Court accepted a plea by consortium of banks against liquor baron Vijay Mallya. Mr. Mallya would have to face contempt of court proceedings. The apex court has directed Vijay Mallya to be present before it on July 10. Mr. Mallya, who fled from India last year. Mallya owes over Rs. 9000 crore to the banks.
          13. Companies, products, services – As growth in the $ 150 billion IT industry slowed down far more than anticipated, large IT services companies are in the process of laying off employees on such a large scale, that has not been seen since the 2008-10 downturn. The mid and senior level employees will be the first to take the hit, even those with experience on more than 10 to 20 years.
          14. Indian politics – Sacked Delhi water minister Kapil Mishra wrote a letter to AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal that he was going to lodge an FIR against him. On his dismissal from the party, Kapil Mishra also challenged Kejriwal to contest election against him from any constituency of his choice. He sought the party chief’s blessings in his fight against corruption.
          15. Regional politics – India has serious reservations about the ambitious China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as it passes through the disputed Pak-occupied Kashmir, which India claims to be a challenge to its territorial sovereignty. Chinese Ambassador to India, Luo Zhaohui, had said that Beijing had no intention to get involved in the sovereignty and territorial disputes between India and Pakistan, and that the CPEC project was for promoting economic cooperation and connectivity in the region. China has expunged its India envoy’s suggestion that China could think renaming the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to allay India’s concerns.
          16. World politics – South Korea elected Moon Jae-in as the new President of the country. The election was necessitated following the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye. Moon, whose victory capped one of the most turbulent political stretches in the nation’s recent history and set up its first liberal rule in a decade.
          17. Constitution and law – The Supreme Court ordered that the former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav will be tried in each of the remaining five cases against him in connection with the multi crore fodder scam. The ruling came on an appeal by the CBI against a 2014 order from the Jharkhand high court that said Prasad could not be tried for the same crime twice.
          18. Indian economy – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said that India’s growth is expected to rebound to 7.2% in the 2017-18 fiscal and 7.7% in 2018-19 after temporary disruptions caused by demonetization. The IMF also recommended removing long-standing structural bottlenecks to enhance market efficiency.
          19. Indian economy – Finance minister Arun Jaitley said that quarterly filing of returns under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was not workable for tax payers above Rs.50 lakh turnover because input tax credit has to be given every month. Only small taxpayers, whose turnover is below Rs 50 lakh per annum under the composition scheme, can avail of filing quarterly returns. But these will not be able to avail of input tax credit.
          20. Terrorism – With Iran warning Pakistan of revenge for sheltering Sunni militants attacking targets in Iran, three of Pakistan’s neighbours have accused it of cross-border terrorism. Iran warned Pakistan that it might consider its own version of surgical strikes after 10 of its border guards were killed by a group identified as Jaish-al-Adl which Iran believes is sheltered in Pakistan.
          21. World politics - US President Donald Trump has appointed Neil Chatterjee to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which oversees electricity, natural gas and oil at the national level. Chatterjee will play a key role in Trump's programme to reshape energy policy, most of which is opposed by environmentalists and Democrats. For Running Updates on Important Themes, go here
