    •  Highlights for 08-05-2017
        • 1. World politics – 1977 born Centrist leader Emmanuel Macron was elected the next President of France on 07 May, becoming the youngest President of France at 39! He defeated his rival, far-right nationalist Marine Le Pen by a huge margin. Macron’s victory has brought huge relief to European allies who feared another populist overthrow after Britain’s vote to quit the EU. This is a strong rebuttal for sentiments driving Brexit, Trump’s nationalism and anti-immigrant stance across the world. Indian IT firms would be slightly relieved
          2. Regional politics – China is facing the heat as it gears up to push OBOR, and India refuses to kowtow or fall in line like most other smaller nations. To find a way out, the communist Chinese regime has now proposed a four-point initiative to improve relations including – (a) aligning its ‘One Belt One Road’ project with India’s ‘Act East Policy’ and (b) restarting negotiations on a free trade pact. The proposal also includes (c) Initiation of negotiations on a ‘China-India Treaty of Good Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation’. China has also expressed its willingness to mediate in resolving the differences between India and Pakistan, a dangerous suggestion.
          3. Indian economy – Now that the bank NPA resolution ordinance is finally through, it is now for the RBI to speed up the process of setting up of committees and identifying the first list of assets. Clause 35AA of the ordinance allows the RBI to direct banks to mandatorily send cases to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). The government is asking the RBI to follow the suggestion of listing the 50 largest stressed assets and giving a deadline to banks to resolve the same by December 31.
          4. Science and technology – NITI Aayog has recommended lowering taxes and interest rates for loans on electric vehicles, while limiting sales of conventional vehicles, indicating a shift in policy in the country. The recommendations are aimed at electrifying all vehicles in the country by 2032. In view of global warming, and Tesla’s rising stature, this is a welcome first step.
          5. Regional politics – The Pakistan army’s sudden aggression along the Line of Control indicates a desire to handicap the Nawaz Sharif government (which may be trying to find peace with India) and harassing India through increased violence in Jammu and Kashmir. The Pakistan military is now clearly showing policy-making initiatives and civilian government has lost power. The blind Chinese support to Pak (“all weather friendship between an Islamic Republic and an Atheist State!”) is a major force behind the curtains.
          6. Indian politics – Sacked water minister of Delhi, Kapil Mishra, kicked off a storm by launching a direct attack on Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal of having accepted a bribe of Rs. Two crore in cash from his minister Satyendra Jain. He said he had submitted details of this to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. The AAP’s recent travails have been augmented by this allegation which most are finding difficult to digest.
          7. Indian politics – Amid continuing controversy over EVM tampering, The Bombay High Court, in a significant order, has directed that electronic voting machines (EVMs) from a booth be sent for forensic analysis to detect any sign of tampering. The order pertains to a booth from a constituency in Pune for the 2014 assembly elections. It is in India’s interest that this issue be settled once and for all.
          8. Regional politics – Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has expressed strong reservations over China’s One Belt One Road initiative ahead of a major meeting on the initiative in Beijing, bringing out unease in India-China relations over a range of political issues. India has so far not announced its participation in the Beijing meeting ignoring China’s arguments that staying away would isolate India. China has built the CPEC right through Indian territory of Kashmir state, in the illegally occupied Gilgit-Baltistan regions, even steamrolling local land-acquisition objections by residents. Pak has tried to declare GB as its fifth province constitutionally (which British Parliament has condemned!).
          9. Companies, products, services – The oil ministry is examining state-run oil companies’ spending on fringe benefits, such as perks, facilities and foreign travel for senior officials of oil and gas PSUs. The ministry has asked all PSUs to submit a report on the perks and facilities being provided to board-level directors, highlighting their monetary implications on the company’s balance sheet and red-flagging if they did not fall within official guidelines.
          10. Defence and Military – Both the PM and Finance Minister (also Defence Minister) have pushed for increasing role of the Indian private sector in defence manufacturing and production in India. The Strategic Partnership model (SP) was stuck in the works since 2016 and has now apparently reached a final conclusion. This will pave the way for de-bottlenecking large needs of the Indian defence forces including new submarines & naval utility helicopters for Navy, single-engine fighter aircrafts for Air Force and armoured vehicles for Army. Big corporates likely to get orders are Adani Group, Reliance Defence, L&T, Tata, M&M, and Bharat Forge.
