The 2017 assembly poll results have re-affirmed that the phenomenon called Narendra Modi will remain the country’s predominant political leader till 2019, and perhaps even beyond. This is a boon for the BJP, a nightmare for others. He is the most extraordinary and charismatic political leader after Mrs. Indira Gandhi of Congress (I). The entire state and national politics would revolve round this pivot and shape the country’s destiny in the time to come. It is incorrect to say that the UP election victory was a result of communal polarization by the BJP. It was more a result of Modi’s political skills, convincing power, mass mobilization by Amit Shah and team etc. Modi seems to have mastered the art of disruptive innovation, a phenomenon of creating new markets and value networks by disrupting the existing ones, to capture the imagination of the fast changing polity. This is tricky. Most opposition parties and liberal analysts are still trapped in old political models, which have become irreverent for today’s voters, while Modi has enlarged his support base and attracted new supporters.

His boldest move – currency demonetization – was criticized by practically everyone including politicians and economist. Modi made it his weapon in the elections. Read our comprehensive Bodhi on DeMo here. With his oratorical skills he could convince the UP voters with his narrative that the move was to snatch the poor people’s wealth from the rich and redistribute it to its rightful owners, the poor. This is the ultimate pro-poor image. The suit boot ki sarkar barb has backfired very badly. The UP victory also rejects the belief that the BJP’s growth is at the cost of a declining Congress. They convincingly defeated two strong regional opponents (SP and BSP) in UP. BJP has made things more difficult for the Congress by pulling away its two major planks –pro-poor and secular party. Their biggest electoral punchline is denuded now. Opposition parties will need to re-think their strategies and come together, like they did in 1977 against Indira Gandhi, if they want to have any chance of countering the unstoppable Modi in the 2019 general elections.
