The Modi Wave – deconstructed

After the 2017 March assembly poll results, and the unexpected landslide wins for the BJP in major states (UP and also Uttarakhand), a lot of thought is going into why exit polls went wrong, how did BJP manage such wins, and how the Modi wave not only remained intact but grew in intensity and stature. Perhaps, the Indian voters have become far too matured for the political parties to understand. They may be poor, but are not silly. One analysis can be : the UP citizens wanted not to be deprived of Modi’s development agenda, hence the one way victory for BJP. (Logic : We have tried the SP and BSP, let’s give them a chance) The BJP projected itself as a potential winner (others did so too), and this helped it garner support from voters of all castes and religions. Maybe Indian voters have truly gone above caste / faith / ideological walls to become one with a development agenda. (this remains to be seen in some more elections in coming years).

Many thought Amit Shah (the BJP President) scored a fluke victory in 2014. No more! He is a proven master strategist for the biggest state due to a massive score in both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Maybe – all parties may need to learn that caste and religion-based electoral politics is a thing of the past. Voters in UP faced a choice : (1) the family - owned Samajwadi Party of Akhilesh Yadav, (2) the one-person owned BSP, a messiah for the Dalits, and (3) the non-family owned BJP. Voters preferred the third option. (Was the family feud of (1) a poll gimmick?) There can be little denying the fact that UP voters have seen through how they’ve been used by both the SP and BSP as “vote banks” – that surely is not very dignifying. A blame on the BJP – they polarize. But with a cool head, one can see that BJP’s polarization was invisible, whereas that used by the BSP, and to an extent the SP, was flagrant and visible. The Hindu Agenda did exist, and make its presence felt at the end of the multiple phases, but it was neither too abrasive nor too blatant. (Ms Mayawati’s handing over tones of tickets only to Muslim candidates clearly was more flagrant). Political parties need to learn their lessons from these election results and adopt an agenda of “professional politics” rather than a         caste-based and religion-based politics. Nothing is lost. Indian democracy is no one’s personal property. The massive victory of Modi and Shah holds the seeds of success for others. Only an open mind, devoid of poisoned subjectivity, and a development agenda needs to be brought to the forefront. The SP, or BSP, or the Congress can make it the next time. Buckle up!
